• The City of St. Charles School District's mission is to REACH, TEACH, and EMPOWER our students. In an effort to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students and complying with the new Missouri state statute 167.950, RSMo, we will begin screening all K-3 students for signs of dyslexia.

Research shows that one in ten people have dyslexia, which is defined as "a specific learning disability that is neurobiological in origin. It is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.” (IDA/NICHD, 2002)

In an effort to reach all students who may show signs of dyslexia, all K-3 students will be screened.

While the screening assessments will give us valuable information to plan for further instruction and specific and targeted research based intervention, they will not tell us if your child does or does not have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a medical diagnosis.

If the screening assessments do indicate an area of concern, your child will receive specific, research based instruction from their classroom teacher, a reading specialist, or an interventionist. If, in the event that your child continues to struggle in the area of concern after several weeks of intense, research based intervention, your child's teacher or principal may contact you.

Thank you for trusting us to REACH, TEACH, and EMPOWER your children and partnering with us to ensure that all of our students are successful.
